Methodology

How the overlap calculation works

1

Add your holding groups.
Enter a portfolio allocation and paste the underlying holdings as TICKER,WEIGHT.

2

Weights are normalized.
Each group's holdings are normalized to 100%, then multiplied by its portfolio allocation.

3

Overlap uses shared weighted exposure.
For two groups, the calculator sums the smaller normalized weight for every shared ticker.

Overlap(A, B) = Σ min(wA,i, wB,i)
FAQ

Common questions

What should I paste into the holdings box?

Use one holding per line, for example AAPL,30 or MSFT 20. The calculator accepts commas or spaces and normalizes the weights automatically.

Does a high overlap percentage automatically mean a bad portfolio?

The percentage measures shared weighted exposure. Use it together with your portfolio goal and the underlying positions shown by the calculator.

Can I compare a direct stock with a fund?

Yes. Create a group for the stock and enter that ticker at 100%, then compare it with the fund's underlying holdings.
