How it works

A proportional split equalizes the rent burden

Each person’s payment is calculated from their share of the combined selected income. If one person earns 60% of the combined income, they pay 60% of the rent. This means everyone contributes the same percentage of their selected monthly income.

Formula

Person’s rent = total rent × person’s income ÷ combined income

Annual income is divided by 12 before the calculation. Final amounts are allocated in whole cents so all payments add exactly to the rent.

Choose one basis

Take-home income or gross income

Take-home income reflects money available after deductions. Gross income is often easier for roommates to compare without discussing personal deductions. Whichever basis you choose, use it consistently for every participant.
